Easter Egg Hunt at the History Park

March 31 was the date for our free to the public 2012 Easter Egg Hunt.  Volunteers arrived early and put out several thousand eggs in four different areas to seperate the gatherers by age group.

As you can see, from this view of the area for the youngest, finding the eggs was not going to be difficult.  Each egg had a piece of candy in it and, in each age group there was an egg with a special prize for the lucky child.  This young lady looks very happy with the great big blue bunny she won.

Other less lucky kids got plenty of candy to put in their easter baskets.  And, one young lady decided to pick a few flowers along the way.

Casino Night

The Punta Gorda Woman’s Club was the site of the Casino Night as a fundraiser to benefit the Train Depot.

There were a variety of games including Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, Poker and indoor horse racing.  All the stakes and winnings were in Depot Dollars which, according to the Wall Streak Journal were trading at par with the US Dollar.  The gambling was serious.

Despite the favorable exchange rate, the Depot Dollars could only be exchanged for prizes donated to the cause.  The high rollers and big winners carefully reviewed the items up for auction.  Phil Wilson did his usual entertaining job of selling them off.

and a good time was had by all.

The Cotton Club Speakeasy at the Woman’s Club

Sunday November 27 was the day the Woman’s Club was turned into the 1920′s Cotton Club.  The front doors were secured and the only entrance was by the “Green Door” on the side.

Machine Gun Kelly checked credentials and stood guard throughout the evening.  Music was provided by ‘Winging It’  with a lot of Cole Porter, Gershwin and other 20′s tunes.  One of the trio seemed quite horrified when she discovered the nature of the venue.

But, the show went on regardless.  There were prizes for the best 20′s costumes won by

Early in the evening, Machine Gun Kelly and our Proprietess were congratulating themselves but later, OH NO, IT’S A RAID!!!

Fortunately, the officer let us off with a warning.

October 19th was Helen Wrobbel Day in Punta Gorda

This wasn’t purely a Punta Gorda Historical Society event.  Sure, Helen has been our president for two years but, her contributions to Punta Gorda go far, far beyond that.  She came to Punta Gorda in 1959 and has been actively involved in the community ever since.  She was active in forming the local Volunteer Fire Department and was the first female firefighter as a volunteer.

Two local businesses, Wilson Realty and Calusa National Bank put her name up in lights.

After the ceremony Helen was taken to the Punta Gorda History Park where punch and brownies were served in the screened porch of the Price House.

All in all, a fine lady was honored and a good time was had by all.

The Quednau-Hindman House Move

The details of the move are covered in the blog for the Quednau-Hindman Project.  But, that wasn’t all that was going on.  While the move was taking place, the Historical Society set up in the park to receive it.  It was the big day for the $1000 gift card basket and the drawing was held shortly after noon. Mac Adamson was the winner, shown here accepting his prize from Soni Stover.

We also had a very special contributor. Sarah O’Sullivan is 5 years old and made custom beadwork to sell to raise money for the move. Here she presents her donation to Louis Desguin to help pay for the move. She asked to keep the box so that she could fill it up again. Sarah understands that the move is just the beginning of the project to re-establish the Youth Museum.

We hope it makes her as happy as she seems in this picture.

THANK YOU SARAH.

VMCCA Car Show at Muscle Car City

August 27th was the day of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America benefit car show at Muscle Car City in Punta Gorda Florida.  In spite of the summer heat there was a terrific turnout with representatives from a number of specialty car clubs.

The entirety of the entry fees were donated to the PGHS project to move the Quednau-Hindman House to the Punta Gorda History Park and to establish it as a youth activity museum.  In addition, the public showed great support to our fundraising raffles.

Best of Show went to this fine red 1947 Cadillac owned by Frank Shulman.   Louis Desguin of the PGHS is seen presenting the trophy.

And, being best of show was a real accomplishment and a tough call by the judges. The mixture was eclectic with Street Rods, Luxury Cars, Muscle Cars and real Antiques.

This is a 1931 Alfa Romeo

With so many cars from so many periods, there was a lot of contrast in the interiors. From 50s chrome to the elegance of Rolls Royce walnut.

The muscle cars and street rods showed their own contrasting approach.  The street rods were simple while the muscle cars had their own embellishments.

Hood ornaments have gone the way of the Dodo, replaced by flat mounted logos.  But, there was a time when they were the crown on the hood.  They sure don’t make them like the old Dodge Ram but, the Rolls Royce maintains their Spirit of Ecstasy.

Street Rods provide a lot of personal expression in a car that is made just for fun.

But, none of this happens without the VMCCA and the PGHS Volunteers who arrive early and stay late to create a successful event.

Of course, not every car is completely restored, there are always a few works in progress and even a few just waiting to get started while others are just waiting for their turn to be shown in the museum at Muscle Car City.
